Tennis is an increasingly popular sport at Habs and the School has 18 astroturf courts in constant use throughout the summer term. Squad training sessions take place during lunchtimes, and the School has regular fixtures after school and on Saturday mornings against other schools in Hertfordshire and the north London area. We also run a highly competitive and successful Inter House tennis competition throughout the summer term and over 100 boys take part across different age groups.
The School enters numerous competitions at various ability levels and age categories. Earlier this year the 1st team (U18) were crowned champions at the regional finals of the prestigious LTA Team Tennis Senior Competition. The team won the title for the first time after an epic journey which started back in September with over 80 schools in the draw. This ranks as a major achievement in Senior School tennis and is testament to the team’s hard work and dedication over the last six years.
In the U15 and U13 age groups success in recent years at county level has also been very encouraging. In 2017 Habs were crowned U15 county champions in the Aegon National competition after a dramatic final held at Queenswood.
For our strongest players, the finale of the tennis season is the Independent Schools Tennis Championships hosted by Eton College. Every year the top 50 independent schools from all over the country compete over fou days, and there have been several recent successes in this most prestigious competition. In 2017 and 2019 at U15 level Habs were runners up in the Phillips Cup, and in 2016 the U13 team fought through to reach the quarter-finals of the main draw, as well as winning the plate competition.
This feat was repeated in July 2019 when our U13 team fought off competition from 34 other schools to win the U13 plate competition once again.
